Dexter
Movie poster design
A conceptual movie poster created as a personal reinterpretation of the TV series Dexter.
The project explores visual contrast, moral duality, and psychological tension through
expressive typography, layered imagery, and symbolic composition.
Overview
Background
This project was created as a creative assignment focused on reinterpreting the visual identity of a film or series with personal significance. Dexter was chosen for its exploration of moral ambiguity, inner conflict, and the duality of justice and violence.
Focus
The focus was on translating the character’s double life into a strong visual narrative. The poster aims to reflect contrast, control, and identity - balancing bright, familiar imagery with darker psychological undertones.
Design Approach
Core Idea
The concept is built around the idea of dual existence - a character who appears controlled and ordinary by day, while hiding violence and darkness beneath the surface. This tension became the foundation for the visual composition and symbolic contrast.
Visual Choices
Photographic layering was used to merge sunlit Miami imagery with darker textures and blood splatter effects. This contrast reinforces the conflict between appearance and reality, highlighting the unsettling balance at the heart of the story.
Color & Type
The typography was treated expressively - the title “DEXTER” appears fractured and painted, split between red and white to symbolize internal conflict and moral division. Color contrast plays a key role in separating surface calm from underlying violence.
Outcome
Process
The poster was designed entirely in Adobe Photoshop using photographic compositing and texture work. Licensed images were used for the cityscape and environment, combined with layered effects to build depth, tension, and atmosphere.
Final look
The final poster presents a cinematic and moody reinterpretation of the series. Bright, familiar visuals are disrupted by aggressive textures and color contrast, reflecting the character’s fractured identity and psychological complexity.
What It shows
The poster reflects my interest in stories built on tension and duality, expressed through layered imagery, expressive typography, and controlled visual contrast.
Final notes
Working on this poster allowed me to explore storytelling through symbolism and contrast. The project reflects my interest in designs that provoke thought, reveal tension beneath the surface, and use visual language to communicate complex emotional narratives.
